BEGINNER TRAINING / COPILOT CHAT

Copilot Chat
Keep it simple.

For people using Copilot Chat at work: learn one task, practise it and find help without needing a Copilot Premium licence.

Four useful habits

  1. Check whether you are using a personal account or your organisation’s Microsoft 365 account.
  2. Explain your goal, provide context and specify the output you want.
  3. Do not assume chat has access to your work files. Supply permitted material or use an available file feature.
  4. Follow your organisation’s data policy and check the facts in the result. Features vary between accounts.

COPILOT CHAT AT WORK / START HERE

Have Copilot Chat at work? Start with this.

  1. Open Copilot with your approved work account. The Copilot Chat experience and available tools depend on your Microsoft 365 subscription and organisation settings.
  2. Pick one small task: rewrite a message, summarise notes or explain a document you are allowed to provide.
  3. Give the goal, background, source material and answer format. Chat-only users should supply the relevant material rather than assuming Copilot can search all workplace files.
  4. Improve the first answer with a follow-up: “make it shorter”, “show an example” or “use only the facts I supplied”. Check the result before sharing it.

If a tool in a video is missing, check the official licence guide below. Missing access is a question for IT; the training prompt can help with how to use tools you already have.

DRAWINGS & DIAGRAMS / A PRACTICAL START

Review a drawing or update a visual copy

The May 2026 image tutorial above is the closest verified video found for this task. It covers visual creation and editing; a dedicated recent tutorial for updating native CAD drawings in work Copilot Chat has not been verified.

  1. Keep the original source file. Supply a legible image or screenshot that your organisation allows you to use.
  2. Ask Copilot to describe what it can read before requesting changes. Check labels, symbols and connections yourself.
  3. List each change and what must stay unchanged. Ask for a change table first.
  4. For an uploaded image, Microsoft’s Create → Edit an image help describes text, shapes and markup tools. For a generated image, Microsoft’s Chat guide describes the image editing pane. Availability depends on your account and settings.
  5. Check every changed label and connection against the source. Image edits produce a visual copy; exact CAD or Visio edits, dimensions and controlled drawing revisions still need the source application and your normal review process.

Stuck? Try this before asking for help.

Use the training prompt above to describe the task, device and what happened. Copilot can ask questions and guide you one step at a time.

Copy a prompt for chat-only work accounts

Replace the bracketed details, then copy into your approved work chat.

What should I include in a request to IT?

Your task, app or browser, account type, the exact error, what you tried and an approved screenshot. Remove sensitive information. Ask whether the missing feature is enabled for your account.
